311 zł for a kilogram of basil. What you really pay at Biedronka

The most expensive product in a typical Biedronka basket isn't meat or fish. It's 8 grams of dried basil for 2.49 zł. That works out to 311 zł per kilogram.

While building Snugmeal, we converted the prices of 152 Biedronka products into one common measure: złoty per kilogram. The shelf price refers to the package, so it looks innocent. Only the per-kilogram conversion shows where your money actually goes.

The price list you don't see on the shelf

The most expensive items we found (prices from July 2026):

Kamis basil 8 g: 311.25 zł/kg
Nescafé crema instant coffee 200 g: 199.95 zł/kg
Lindt lindor milk cornet pralines 200 g: 184.95 zł/kg
Tic tac orange 18 g: 166.11 zł/kg
Kamis ground black pepper 16 g: 155.62 zł/kg
Lipton yellow label black tea (92 bags) 184 g: 108.64 zł/kg

At the other end of the scale: flour 1.79 zł/kg, semolina 3.98 zł/kg, oat flakes 4.99 zł/kg.

Nobody buys a kilogram of basil

Exactly. And yet a kilogram of dried basil exists and costs 15.65 zł. That's what an online spice wholesaler charges for a 1 kg pack, checked before publishing. The same dried basil, just without the tiny bag and the famous logo. At the supermarket you pay almost twenty times more for the weight.

A kilogram is a years-long supply for a home kitchen, so treat that number as a measure of scale, or split a pack with someone. The mechanism is universal: the smaller the bag, the more you pay per weight.

Three swaps inside Biedronka itself, counted to the grosz

You don't have to order wholesale sacks. The same mechanism works between shelves of a single store:

Plony Natury roasted buckwheat groats: the 400 g bag works out to 7.48 zł/kg, the 900 g bag of the same groats to 4.94 zł/kg. An identical product, 34% cheaper.
Fusilli pasta: Pastani 500 g is 6.78 zł/kg, Dobrusia 1 kg is 4.89 zł/kg, 28% cheaper. One honest caveat after a reader's comment: Pastani is durum wheat semolina and Dobrusia is common wheat flour, so part of the difference comes from the composition, not the package alone. If durum matters to you, stick with Pastani; the package mechanism still shows in the buckwheat above.
Tomatoes for sauce: Mutti peeled 400 g is 15.72 zł/kg, Nasza Spiżarnia tomato pulp 8.22 zł/kg. If you crush them in the pot anyway, same job, 48% cheaper.

What that leaves in your pocket

Take an ordinary cooking week: a kilo of pasta, half a kilo of groats, two cans of tomatoes. These three swaps alone are 9.16 zł a week, around 476 zł after a year. The pasta and groats duo makes about 164 zł of that; the tomato swap adds the rest. Without changing what you eat and without chasing promotions.
