Over half that box of granola is the same oat as the bag next to it

Two products from the same brand sit next to each other on the breakfast shelf at Biedronka. A box of crunchy granola and a bag of rolled oats. We checked what actually separates them.

Today's prices, converted to kilos by the shop itself:

• Vitanella crunchy classic 350 g: 5.99 zł, that's 17.11 zł per kilo
• Vitanella mountain rolled oats 1 kg: 4.99 zł, that's 4.99 zł per kilo

More than a threefold difference per kilo. The ingredient list is where it gets interesting.

In the crunchy box the first entry is cereal flakes at 60 percent, of which wholegrain oat flakes are 55.5 percent. Then come sugar, sunflower oil at 7.6 percent, oat flour, wheat flour, coconut flakes, rice flour, corn grits, wheat bran, salt and an emulsifier. The bag next to it has one ingredient: mountain rolled oats.

So in a 350 g box, about 194 g is the same oat lying a metre away at 4.99 zł per kilo. The markup buys you what got added: mostly sugar, oil and flours.

The sugar shows up in the table too. Crunchy has 21 g of sugars per 100 g, nearly 74 g in the whole box. In the oats sugar isn't a separate ingredient, because there's only one ingredient.

Now the honest part: these aren't the same product. Crunchy is ready, crisp and sweet, you pour it into a bowl and eat. Oats need five minutes on the hob or an overnight soak. You're buying convenience and texture, and all we're doing is pricing that convenience.

Per portion it's simplest. A 40 g bowl is 68 groszy from the box and 20 groszy from the bag. Forty-eight groszy of difference on one breakfast.

The rule at the shelf fits into one glance: check what percentage of grain the pack declares, and what comes right after it. If sugar and oil follow the grain immediately, that's what the markup is for.
