Having the cheese sliced for you costs 2.40 zł a pack
Two 400 gram packs of gouda, side by side. In a block 12.59 zł, in slices 14.99 zł.
- Światowid gouda, block 400 g: 12.59 zł, that's 31.48 zł per kilo
- Włoszczowa gouda in slices, 400 g: 14.99 zł, that's 37.48 zł per kilo
That's 19 percent more per kilo and 2.40 zł more at the till for the same weight of cheese.
We checked the ingredient lists, because that's usually where the explanation hides. This time there is nothing to explain. Block: milk, salt, calcium chloride as a stabiliser, lactic acid bacteria cultures, microbial rennet. Slices: pasteurised milk, salt, calcium chloride as a stabiliser, lactic bacteria cultures, microbial rennet. Practically the same list.
One caveat has to go up front: these are two different dairies, so part of the gap can't be pinned on slicing alone. The direction holds across the whole shelf, though. Slices in small 135 g packs work out at 45.85 and 48.07 zł per kilo, roughly half again more than the block, although there the pack size and a different type of cheese come into play too.
What it adds up to over a year
If you buy one pack a week, that 2.40 zł difference is 124.80 zł a year. It's one of those amounts that doesn't sting at the till and is quite visible over twelve months.
None of this makes slices a foolish buy. In the morning with kids around, or for sandwiches assembled at work, ready slices save exactly the minutes you don't have. But at home, slicing a block takes a minute with a knife, and the difference sits in your wallet rather than on the plate.
The rule is short and works along the whole chiller: with cheese, compare the price per kilo rather than per pack, and ask whether you're paying for cheese or for someone having sliced it. The same goes for cold cuts, diced vegetables and fruit in little tubs.
