A jar of pasta sauce is nearly three times the price of one made from pulp
A jar of ready pasta sauce costs 11.99 zł. The same sauce made from tomato pulp and a few spices comes to 4.07 zł. Ten minutes in a pan is the difference.
In the last post an oatmeal sachet was six times dearer than the same oats loose. Jarred sauce is the same convenience markup, just at dinner. And again, it isn't that the ready sauce is bad. It's what it takes for making something you'd make yourself in a quarter of an hour.
What's in the jar, and what's in the pan
Prices and ingredient lists checked live in July 2026:
- Mutti arrabbiata pasta sauce 400 g: 11.99 zł, that's 29.97 zł per kilogram.
- Nasza spiżarnia tomato pulp 400 g: 3.29 zł, that's 8.22 zł per kilogram.
The ready sauce is a decent product: 87% tomato (pulp, passata and concentrate), plus olive oil, onion, garlic, chili and herbs. The pulp is 100% tomato. To get the same thing on the plate, you add garlic, a spoon of oil, a pinch of chili and basil to the pulp. We counted those extras from the recipe amounts: granulated garlic, oil and basil come to 0.78 zł per jar of pulp. The whole homemade sauce is 4.07 zł, against 11.99 zł from the jar. The same serving of sauce, nearly three times cheaper.
This isn't the same pair as the first post. There we compared pulp with whole Mutti tomatoes, raw ingredient to raw ingredient. Here we compare a ready sauce with a sauce made from that same pulp.
Sauce from pulp in ten minutes
You don't need a cookbook. For two portions:
Heat a spoon of oil in a pan over medium heat, about 1 minute. Add a teaspoon of granulated garlic and a pinch of chili, fry about 30 seconds until fragrant, watching that the garlic doesn't burn. Pour in the pulp (400 g), season with salt and a pinch of dried basil, simmer on low for about 8 minutes, stirring now and then, until the sauce thickens. Cook the pasta meanwhile per the package, about 9 minutes, and toss it with the sauce.
The convenience bill over a year
One jar of sauce a week is 11.99 zł. Homemade sauce from pulp is 4.07 zł for the same amount. That's 7.92 zł a week, around 412 zł a year. Per portion it's about 4 zł, if a jar covers two meals.
You use the pulp entirely, so its price goes into every sauce. Garlic, oil and basil you buy once and they last for many sauces, so the cost counts only the part that's actually used, those 0.78 zł per jar. At the till the pantry costs more in one go, but it's a stock for weeks.
When the jar makes sense
The ready sauce has its place when there's genuinely no time. But ten minutes by a pot of pasta isn't a lack of time, it's a habit. You pay that markup when you reach for the jar out of routine.
Snugmeal counts differences like this for you and builds a whole week of meals from them, around your budget and real prices from Polish stores, with a total that matches at the till.
